What is a Moissanite Size Chart?
A moissanite size chart makes it easier to comprehend the true physical characteristics of a stone. Usually, it provides the cut's size in millimeters (mm) together with the weight in carats.
The most important point to keep in mind is that moissanite is less dense than diamonds. Accordingly, a 1-carat moissanite will have a somewhat greater physical size than a 1-carat diamond. The most precise approach to see how a stone will appear when placed in a piece is via a size chart.
Understanding Millimeter (mm) vs Carat
Weight is measured in carats (ct). Two hundred milligrams (0.2 grams) are equivalent to one carat.
The actual width and height of a stone are measured in millimeters (mm), a unit of length. Two stones with the same carat weight can have entirely distinct appearances since moissanite is around 10%–15% lighter than a diamond of the same size.
Because of this, moissanite is typically sold and described using its exact millimeter dimensions rather than just its carat weight.
Diamond Equivalent Weight (DEW)
A standardized reference called DEW (Diamond Equivalent Weight) indicates how many carats a diamond would weigh if it were the same size (in millimeters) as a moissanite stone. For instance, a 6.5mm round moissanite has the same appearance as a 1.00 carat diamond but weighs only 0.88 carats. So it is commonly marketed as a "1 ct DEW moissanite."
How to Use The Size Chart
- Choose a shape from the following list: round, oval, emerald, etc.
- Pay attention to the millimeter measurements versus just the weight in carats. This is the actual size of the face of the stone.
- To find out the diamond carat size the stone physically resembles, look at the DEW column.
- The real physical weight of the stone in carats can be found in the Moissanite Weight column.
